We know the importance of sleeping on the right pillow for our head and neck, but what about our hips? If you find yourself waking up with sore hips (or even being woken up by them!), it could be from having incorrect support during the night.

The most common sleep position is on our side, and what tends to happen is our pelvis will rotate forward which creates a muscle imbalance in the pelvis, lower back, and lower limbs.

A tried-and-true solution to this is to pop a pillow in between your knees when you sleep on your side.

Yep, it may sound weird or uncomfortable, but the benefits are undeniable. Placing a pillow between your knees when side sleeping helps keep your knees on top of each other to prevent twisting of the pelvis if the legs are uneven, so in turn also keeps the pelvis aligned.

It also encourages better posture and can reduce back pain by taking the strain off shortened muscles when the spine and hips are properly aligned.

If that hasn’t sold you already, then sleeping with a pillow between the knees can also reduce sciatica symptoms by preventing you from twisting your hips which puts more stress on the sciatic nerve.

To properly place the pillow, lay on your side with your knees slightly bent towards your chest. Place a firm pillow between your knees/thighs so that your hips are level. If the pillow is too thin, you may want to use two pillows.
